The Bigelow Traverse is one of New England’s finest ridgewalks — a 16–18‑mile journey across the rugged Bigelow Range with sweeping views of Flagstaff Lake and the vast Maine woods. Starting near East Flagstaff Road and finishing at Stratton Brook Pond, the route links the Horns, Avery Peak, and West Peak in a wild, remote, and airy traverse. It’s quieter than the Whites, wilder than the Greens, and defined by granite ridges, alpine ponds, and true North Woods energy. A scenic, soulful, and distinctly Maine epic.
• Location: Stratton, Maine
• Distance: 16 miles
• Elevation Gain: 5,702 ft
• Estimated Time: 8 - 12 hours
• Route Type: Point to Point
The best time to hike the Bigelow Traverse is June through October, when the ridge is mostly dry, the views are clear, and the North Woods weather is at its most stable. June and early July bring bugs and lingering mud but cooler temps. July–September offers the most reliable footing and long daylight, making it the prime window for a full traverse. Fall delivers peak foliage and crisp air — one of the most beautiful times to be on the Bigelow Range. Outside this window, snow, ice, and high winds can turn the route into a far more serious undertaking. For most hikers, mid‑summer through early fall is the sweet spot.
