The Art Loeb Trail is a 30‑mile ridgeline traverse through the wild heart of the Pisgah — a journey across balds, knobs, quartzite domes, and deep Appalachian forest. Beginning at Davidson River, the route climbs steadily into the high country, linking iconic summits like Shining Rock, Black Balsam, and Tennent Mountain before dropping toward Cold Mountain and the Boy Scout Camp. It’s rugged, rooty, humid, and soulful — a long, atmospheric Southern Appalachian epic defined by fog, wind, forest, and sweeping Blue Ridge views.
• Base Camp: Brevard, North Carolina
• Distance: 30 miles
• Elevation Gain: 8,106 ft
• Estimated Time: 10 - 16 hours
• Route Type: Point-to-Point
The best time to hike the Art Loeb Trail is April through June and September through November, when temperatures are cooler, humidity is lower, and the balds offer clear, dramatic views. Spring brings wildflowers and crisp mornings, while fall delivers peak foliage and stable weather. Summer is fully doable but hot, humid, and storm‑prone, making the long ridge sections more taxing. Winter can bring ice on the balds and slick roots in the forest. For the smoothest, most rewarding experience, aim for spring or fall — the Pisgah at its finest.
